No Photos

My camera and laptop are not talking to each other at
the moment so I cannot show you what I have been stitching.
But I have been stitching.

Caswell quilt block 8 is done and I have started
block 9

I have taken the plunge with the farmers wife
and begun machine quilting. Quite a task given the
size of this quilt but little by little
I will get it done.

The Folly is also getting closer to being a completed quilt.
I just love hand quilting this quilt.

Hopefully photos soon

New Project

The Farmers Wife is pin basted and
waiting to be quilted

I have not decided how I will tackle this yet
It will just have to sit awhile,

That means I need a new project for
my Thursday sit and sew afternoons

This is what I have chosen
It's a Robyn Falloon quilt from this book.

and I have made a start, pinned in place ready for
this weeks sewing.

Farmers Wife

I thought it about time to share with you
 a farmers wife update.

only a few setting triangles to go in
and the border.
I have decided on one large[very large]
border. Between 8 and 10 inches wide with
mitred corners
It will be a very large quilt.

Time to start thinking of the next project.
I like to have something just for my
thursday sewing group.
I have it narrowed down to a couple
of different ideas, but not fabric has
been cut yet.

2 posts in 1

I need to catch up, no post last week
so it is a double dose this week.

Firstly and very importantly
I have a little Ta Da

I have started the Caswell Quilt
block A1 is done
only 29 to go
block A2 is prepped and ready to go.

Next onto this weeks post
Saturday I had a day out to the Lang Lang quilt show
I took the scenic tourist route and found a
fantastic quilt shop on the way at Korumburra.
I think this shop will feature in my future
lots of great reproduction fabrics and some of the
best display quilts ever.

After quite a long time spent in Korumburra
it was back on the road to find Lang Lang.

An interesting show with lots of traders,
tables and chairs everywhere for people to have
cups of tea and a few quilts.

Of course I have photos of my favourite quilts.

This one has an interesting centre panel,
but the piecing around it was perfect and really
made the quilt.
I think I have a similar panel tucked away somewhere
just waiting for inspiration.

The colours don't show up well but this quilt
would have won viewer choice for sure.

thirdly not a large quilt but it really appealed to me

now it's time to get back to the next Caswell Quilt block

What a week

I really want to start a new project
my fingers are itching to start something new
BUT
I must finish something first
SO
this week I have 2 finished

a teddy bear made from an old fur coat for a new member
of the family due to arrive in a couple of weeks

remember this

well it's now this
all blocks made and together,
quilted, bound and hanging

Sunday I wemt into the city to
Australasian Quilt Convention
A great day catching up with friends
and sooo much inspiration

I could not stop looking at this quilt
I am in awe
such tiny perfect machine piecing

Love the colors and secondary pattern
I have this pattern on my to do list
I think it may move up the list now

amazing 1 inch squares all EPP
then hand tied for quilting
and the finishing of the edges still have me thinking HOW

So now with a couple of projects finished
and a heap of inspiration
I am going to start
needle turn appliqueing
The Caswell Quilt
and
hand quilting of the
Folly

Lucky Me

I am now the proud owned of a
Singer Featherweight
made around august 1956

what a beauty, perfect running order.
The old saying is true
one man [or woman's] trash is another's treasure.

complete with case, instruction book and accessories.

I was planning to finish the needle turn applique
on these blocks as practise before starting
The Caswell Quilt
Next piece of luck,
when I found them, all applique was finished
all I had to do was sew 2 borders on each.
4 large cushion fronts finished.
Now just to find some fun fabric for the back.

No hurry I certainly don't new cushions at the moment.
Maybe that is why I never finished them before.

bag pattern

I could not write this pattern so it made sense. I hope pictures help.

Here goes

Start with a square or rectangle of fabric
Size does not really matter
[ i made yours from fat 1/4s]

fold the top edge over about 1/2" and press

then fold in half with the pressed edge at the top,
sew side seam, do not catch top edge, this will become the casing.

press the seam open

fold the bottom of the bag towards the top about 2" short.
Press the fold

using the fold as a guide, stitch across bag

turn the bottom of the bag right side out over the lining of the bag

fold the folded edge of the bag over raw edge, pin in place

stitch close to first fold. stitch another row about 1/2" away to form casing.

turn bag right side in, flatten out base and stitch across ears
to form square bottom

turn bag right side out

thread cord or ribbon through casing.
Finished

Hope this helps ladies
give me a call if you get stuck

Birds in the Air

Finally
I have finished making 100 birds in the air blocks

but now I'm thinking instead of making the quilt
10 blocks by 10 blocks,
9 blocks by 11 blocks would be a better size and shape
for a wall hanger.

I had better measure my wall space and start
laying these blocks out.

A Flimsy finish

Not a proper finish but a quilt top

I got inspiration for this quilt from
Di Ford's book
Primarily Quilts.
No pattern just a pic so I made my own
template and off I went.
Each block is 5" finished so the quilt will be
about 80" square.

100% scraps
every last piece
but I cannot see a difference in the stash.
I would like to do another quilt top and not buy a thing
very satisfying

It's Finished

Again not great pics but
the 50th birthday present I have been stitching is
FINISHED

and a month ahead of time
All that is needed is a label and wrapping.

So what to do but plan the next project

A new basket packed with supplies
Fabric, freezer paper, template plastic,
pattern and background fabric.

and a tin crammed with thread, pins. needles,
scissors and pens.
All ready to start.
I think for such a work of art that I hope this will be
I will have to get some practise needle turning first.
So back to the UFO pile.

Farmers Wife

I have not mentioned the farmers wife for so
long, she is not forgotten.
I stitch a bit each week at my Thursday afternoon
sit and sew.
Between chatting and laughing, she is coming together.

almost half of the blocks are together.
Only a little over half more to go, then setting
triangles and the border left to do.
Not much if you say it fast.

Summer Quilting

Summer and Quilting
Not two words that usually go together
but summer seems to have disappeared.
I can't do anything about the weather so lets make the most
of it and hand quilt.

a mixture of big stitch

and traditional quilting.

I have never done this before and really struggled
to accept this would be alright.
Then I decided that the quilt would not complain
and nobody would suffer, so away I went.
I am very happy with the result so far,
very soft and snuggly.

Love this backing fabric, a blue hills blue.

Not so slow

I have half a quilt.

How did this happen so quickly?
All hand pieced.

On my lap watching cricket in the evening.

This week the weather is forecast to be a lot cooler,
I might get some hand quilting done.
